Two For Now

The view down the South Kaibab Trail:

Dave and I complete the hike on Monday afternoon:

Man, That's One Big Hole In The Ground

Some thoughts on our short vacation…amazing, beautiful, spectacular, peaceful, and very self satisfying.

We did it, we survived, and we’re here to tell you all about it. Tens of thousands of people go to the Grand Canyon every year but how many people actually hike to the bottom! We are very happy to be in that small percentage that makes it to the bottom. It was seriously the most amazing and ridiculous thing we have done.

We left the house on Friday morning and drove out to the south rim. We made a pit stop in Lake Havasu to have lunch and see London Bridge. The original London Bridge is there because a long time ago it just couldn’t handle the traffic in London anymore so the city of London decided to auction the bridge off. The winner of the auction was the city of Lake Havasu. We ate lunch at a brewery, which had really good Heffewiezen and White Ale. A couple of hours later we were back on the road to the GC. We set up camp and went to eat a nice big dinner before we started our long journey. Then it was off to bed early since we had to get up a bit before 6 to catch the hikers shuttle.

Saturday morning we got on the shuttle to the south Kaibab Trail. We were on this 7 mile trail right about 7:30am. The weather was perfect and a few clouds in the sky to try and help block the sun every once in a while. The south Kaibab Trail was beautiful! It follows a ridge so there were gorgeous views of the canyon all the time! I have to say though; going downhill really isn’t as easy as people may think. This trail is steep and boy could we feel it in our calfs and hips when we were done. My poor toes were in agony from hitting the front of my shoes. It took us 4.5 hours to reach our campground. Once we got there we found a great campsite right along the Bright Angel Creek. We set up the tent and got in the creek to cool and wash off…what a great treat for our feet! Dave was exhausted and took a bit of a nap while I explored some. Later that night we cooked our dinner on our stove. We had Honey Mustard Chicken, Corn, and Apple Cobbler (all dehydrated). Yeah we could have ordered dinner through Phantom Ranch, but we decided it would be nice to have the full backpacking experience. The Apple Cobbler was actually really good. We went to the ranger program that night then enjoyed some beer and wine at the Phantom ranch canteen.

Sunday was a day to just enjoy the bottom of the canyon, so we slept in. We were pretty glad we built in a rest day at the bottom. It was just so nice to be able to explore and relax down there. After breakfast (croissants and nutella) we did a small hike on the river trail. This short hike was beautiful…it follows the Colorado River and has spectacular views of the canyon. The temp was rising so we decided to go back and get in the river again. After soaking in the river I decided I wanted to take another short hike. Dave however was worried about not having enough in his muscles to get back up so he went to read his book at the Canteen while I hiked on the Clear Creek trail to the Phantom Ranch Overlook. My hike took a couple of hours, but my toes were killing me again so I headed back. I figured I’d grab Dave and we’d go back to the river, but I sat down in the air conditioned canteen and we started talking to this couple from Colorado. Two hours later, and a couple of glasses of wine the canteen was closing for the afternoon. We had a lot of fun talking to this group. Some people go to the Grand Canyon to hike from the north rim to the south rim, but they were doing north to south and back to the north rim! Awesome! Once the canteen closed we went back to the river and then cooked dinner. Dinner on this night was lasagna and mashed potatoes (dehydrated again). The lasagna was actually really good. After the ranger program we went straight to bed since we had to get up early.

For our hike out on Monday we got up at 4am. It took us a while to pack up the campsite so we were on the trail at 5am. We did this to avoid the heat in the bottom of the canyon. The only downfall was we had to hike with our headlamps for about an hour. Dave was seriously awesome on the hike out. We was kinda worried about climbing about 5000 ft in elevation with a 30 pound pack and he thought it was going to take him like 12 hours or something to get to the top. I however, knew he would be great! The start of the hike follows the CO river and it was a bit eerie crossing the silver bridge in the dark and hearing the rush of water below you. We then hiked through a gorgeous canyon and reached Indian Gardens at 8am! The hike up to this point was so beautiful and it was amazing watching the sunlight hit the canyon walls as it rose higher in the sky. After Indian Gardens the hike on the Bright Angel Trail gets more difficult. You have to wander up 4 miles of switchbacks and gain about 3000 ft in elevation. But Dave continued to cruise on up. We reached the top at 12:40…it took us pretty much exactly 7.5 hours to go 9.6 miles and climb up 5000 feet in elevation. Dave was seriously awesome. I was so proud of him. The last mile was tough on him but he kept going the best he could. As we were coming up there was a group going down. These people were seriously my heroes….they must have been in their 70s and were hiking down with big packs just like ours. Really, I hope I’m like that at their age. When we started to near the top and while we were at the top, we had lots of people asking us about our hike. They seemed pretty amazed. Once we got to the top of the rim we made a beeline to the ice cream shop, but we also took some time to take a look at where we came from. What an amazing sight to actually look at the trail and the canyon to see where we came from. So amazing. And so satisfying that we did that on our own two feet and carrying all of the stuff we needed for three days. I just don’t know how to put it in words as to how awesome of an accomplishment this was. I’m so glad we did this hike. I had the time of my life!

After our hike was complete we made the drive to Laughlin, Nevada to sleep in a comfy bed in a hotel and enjoy some gambling at the casinos. We had lots of fun, enjoyed a wonderful cooked Italian dinner and a bottle of wine. Amazingly we weren’t totally exhausted, and ended up staying up till about 11pm. We slept in on Tuesday and then wandered around the casinos and had more fun together.

Pictures…where are they? Later this week, I promise. I will post some to the blog, I took plenty!

Training Hike #1

One thing I really love about California....You can easily get to a different climate in a short amount of time. It was in the upper 70s or so when we left Lancaster yesterday, by the time we got to our destination it was about 55!

So what did we do? Well today was our official 1st hike of the 2008 summer! So last night we drove up to Lone Pine, CA to camp up near Horseshoe Meadow. We set up camp, cooked dinner over the fire, and enjoyed some wine and smores.

The sky after sunset was gorgeous.

Now we knew it would be chilly and came prepared, but it was so cold. I wish I had a photo of me before I went to sleep. I had on a ski hat, wool socks, gloves, 4 shirts, and 2 pairs of pants! But we woke up to a beautiful morning.

We were on the trail at 9am and hiked to the first of cottonwood lakes. Since it was our first hike, there was really no need to go any further. The roundtrip mileage (according to my Garmin Forerunner) was 10.45 miles! Not bad and we did it in less than 6 hours (with stops and lunch).

Here is where we went! (Notice the jacket and gloves...it was a bit cool up there)And we saw plenty of these...Marmots.
But we did have to cross a bit of snow! Yup, I said snow on June 1st!

We really do enjoy hiking in the sierras...just to gorgeous. Quite possibly some of the best scenery this country has to offer.

I'm so excited...I just can't hide it!

So today I get home and rush to get the mail as I have done all week. Why? Because I've been waiting for some hopefully very good news.

Today it came...from the National Park Service! After we didn't get a permit to hike Mt Whitney, I started asking myself what other backpacking hike would I like to do before we think about having kids...the GRAND CANYON! So today I reach in the mailbox, see the envelope and notice its not the thin envelope I got from Mt Whitney. This one was much more bulkier! Yup, we got the permits!

This time I requested at a minimum of 1 night, said we were willing to camp at almost any campground, and hike any trail. Basically leaving our options almost limitless. Luckily we got one of our top options. We got two nights at Bright Angel so we can spend a day actually hiking in the canyon and playing around. We are hiking Bright Angel on the way down and coming back up by the South Kaibab Trail. We go down on Sep 20th and return on Monday Sept 22nd! At least I'm going to get my backpacking trip after all.
We still plan to practice the backpack thing by going to Yosemite or somewhere in the sierras for an overnight trip during the summer. Our first training hike will be this weekend as we have to train for Half Dome. We will be going up Half Dome, again, on June 14th!

Yippee....I AM SO INCREDIBLY EXCITED! I literally came bouncing into the house today.

Mt Whitney Attempt #1

This weekend was supposed to be our amazing 22 mile hike to the summit of Mt Whitney. However, mother nature had other plans. A storm came rolling in Wed/Thurs into central and Southern Cali. So we made it a bit over half way and ended up traveling 12 miles roundtrip. I still camped with my friends at Mt Whitney Portal on Thursday night. It was cold, but not as bad as it could have been. Several decent sized thunder storms came rolling through during the night. At 4am we woke up and put on lots of layers and started our ascent. We pretty much new today was not going to be the day to reach the summit of Whitney. Instead we decided to see how the conditions were and how far we could get. We ended up going 6 miles up to Trail Camp at 12,000 feet. It was ridiculous up there. On Setp 21st (1st day of FALL!) there must have been 6 inches of snow and nearing white out conditions due to the wind gusts. While taking a break up there, we decided we had gone far enough as the weather started to look like it was turning for the worst. I will make it up there, hopefully next summer. And I will not attempt this in Sept. again. Here are a few shots from the hike. From looking at them, you would think it was winter! (The temp at 12,000 feet was about 19 degrees!)I spent the remainder of the day and the next morning photographing the Lone Pine area. Here are a few more shots.

11,760 feet!

Yup, our highest hike yet. I think my previous hike was up to 11,200 feet. So I topped that by 500 feet! And This was Dave's first hike above 11000 feet! It was so incredibly amazing being at that altitude. Words just can't describe it. Hopefully my photos will help (once I have the uploaded). But wow what a view. This hike was about 11 miles round trip. We ended up at Kearsanage Pass (sp?). Basically its one of the back door entrances to Kings Canyon NP. We sat up top eating our lunch looking out over the lakes and peaks of Kings Canyon. What a sight! It was still early in the day (12:30) when we headed down. So we decided to take our time and enjoy the sights. We stopped at one of the lakes and sat on a rock in the middle of the water, then we found a waterfall further down the trail. I really enjoyed this hike and highly recommend it for anyone wishing to explore the eastern sierras.

The Sign Greeting informing us that we reached our final destination!

Dave enjoying the top of the pass! and glad we doesn't have to hike uphill anymore!

Cali at its Best

Wow..can you belive that in 5 days I will have been living in california for 3 years! OMG...time flies.

Friday was my day off of work and I decided to enjoy it on my own doing 2 things I love. Photography and Hiking. I woke up early and drove the 2.5 hours to a trail head near Lone Pine, Ca in the eastern sierras. The drive up was very nerve racking. As the road was about 15miles of switchbacks and it felt like there was no shoulder or anything to keep you from going off the edge. So I drove very slowly. I was okay until I was bout 5ooo feet up. The traiil head started at just over 9,000 feet. I seem to have a fasciantion with these mountains latley. I love the fact that you can easily hike above the tree line and enjoy looking out at nothing but sky and granite rock. This hike was one of the easist I've done lately since the elvation change was only about 1200 feet. Ihiked the Cottonwood Lakes trail to 5 amazingly pristime lakesand enjoyed time photographing them and just relaxing. I was gone about 7 hours and even though I was by myself I really enjoyed the day. To keep me occupied I brought my IPOD which worked really well. As last year when I hiked by myslef I felt rather lonely since I had no one to talk to. During the hike I saw Llamas, Mules, Horses (even a wild one) and Marmots! If you don't know what a marmot is it is a gopher looking thing that lives in the granite rocks. They are so cute!
The Sierras are so amazing. I just love them. I can't imagine living far away from some sort of incredible mountain range. Like some people have to have the beach, I have to have the mountins. Its so incredible to be in total peace and quiet and just enjoy nature at her best. I love how blue the sky is once you hike above the haze and pollutants. I love the lakes and how clear they are. And I love the grante peaks towering to anywhere between 11, ooo - 14, 000 feet. During this hike I went to a bit over 11, 000 feet and completed 12 miles.

Big Pine Creek

It's been a while since I've posted anything, sorry. Things have been very hectic. We had a last minute 4 day trip to Florida due to some family matters that needed to be taken care of. On Friday we flew back to LA after some stressful days and decided to continue on with our plans to hike in Big Pine. We met a friend from LA on friday night, got a few hours of sleep, and drove up to Big Pine. We arrived about 10am and imeediatly got on the trail. We managed to hike 11 miles roundtrip to 3 of the most beautiful alpine lakes. There is a glacier in the mountains up there and the lake is fed by the glacier so it is the most beautiful torqouise color I have ever seen. I was truly like seeing the water of the carribean or some other tropical island but at an altitude of 10, 000 feet. Our total hike covered an elevation range of about 2600 feet. This was our first hike of the summer to train for Half Dome. Im so glad we did it, it was so amazing up there. And I think this was the highest I have hiked yet. The altitude was over 10,200 feet at the third lake.
The third lake on the North Fork Trail
The water was so crystal clear and we filled up our hydration packs at the top (along with iodine pills too of course!). We managed to get back down to the bottom by 6pm and we went to set up camp. Then it was off to sit by the river with a beer and soak our sore feet. We spent the rest of the night cooking dinner and relaxing by the fire until it was time to go to bed. The next morning I walked a little with Dave to take some photos around the campsite area, which turned out to be very pretty.

Pond at Campground

River at the campground

Then we headed down the road to view Alabama Hills and the Mt Whitney Portal.

View of Mt Whitney from the Portal Road

Mt Whitney was gorgeous and I'm still determiend to do that hike eventually. I just have to find someone willing to hike it with me (something like 21 miles roundtrip and about 6000 feet elevation change!).
